The Lehman College softball team (2-9 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) dropped a pair of non-conference games on Thursday evening, falling to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College of Long Island (8-6 Overall, 3-1 Skyline) by scores of 20-3 and 10-2 at the South Field in the Bronx. Since picking up a pair of victories over St. Elizabeth's back on March 20th, the Lightning and have dropped six consecutive games.
In game one, it was the Golden Eagles' Jackie Buturla picking up the victory, as she hurled a complete-game, five-inning gem, allowing just three runs (only one earned) on three hits while walking two batters and striking out four. Lehman's Racine Brown got the start and took the loss, as she hurled two innings and allowed 11 runs (seven earned) while walking 11 batters. Natalie Martinez hurled the final three innings for the Lightning.
Offensively for St. Joseph's College of Long Island, it was Alyssa Sieber leading the way for her team as she finished 3-for-4 with a double, a pair of singles, three runs scored, three runs driven in, and a walk. Buturla chipped in a pair of hits including a double while also scoring a run, driving in four, and walking once. Gina Moscatelli went 1-for-3, scoring four runs and walking three times in the victory as well.
Despite the loss for the Lightning in game one, Lehman College did manage to collect three hits – with Vania Cadet, Natalie Martinez, and Genesis Batista each picking up singles. Batista had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, and Lehman trailed 4-3 after one inning of action, but it was all Golden Eagles from there.
In game two of the evening, the Golden Eagles did most of their damage late. After trailing 1-0 after two innings of play, St. Joseph's scored three runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and five in the fifth to account for 10 total runs and eventually enforcing the mercy rule. Lauren Guzzardi got the victory for her squad, hurling five innings and allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits while walking three and striking out four. Racine Brown started game two for Lehman and she took the loss, allowing all 10 runs (nine earned)
Offensively for the Golden Eagles in the nightcap, it was Sarah Merritt putting forth a terrific performance as she finished 4-for-4 with three doubles, four runs scored, and four runs batted in. Jeanine Rasmussen went 2-for-4, singled twice, scored two runs and drove two batters in, and Erica Stark singled twice. Despite the loss for the Lightning, Genesis Batista singled twice and drove in a run.
The Lightning will return to action Monday afternoon as Lehman College takes to the road to battle the Bearcats of Baruch College in a CUNYAC doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
