Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

The Lehman College softball team split a pair of non-conference games with Mount Saint Mary's College, defeating the Blue Knights in a pitcher's duel in game one by a score of 2-1 before falling to the Mount 13-0 in the nightcap at the South Field in the Bronx.

Prior to the start of the doubleheader, the Lehman College athletic department - including Sports Information Director Stephen Spagnoli - as well at the Director of Athletics - Dr. Martin L. Zwiren, as well as head coach John Pisano and the rest of the softball program took a few moments to honor senior Taniefa Taylor for her three years (2007, 2008, and 2010) of dedication to the softball program. Spagnoli said a few kind words about the outfielder before Zwiren presented her with the plaque.

In the opener, Lightning hurler Natalie Martinez pitched a terrific game and picked up the victory, allowing just one run (unearned) on five hits while walking three batters and striking out six. Her counterpart – Caitlin Maynes – was equally as good – but she took the loss as she hurled six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out 10.

Lehman scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when Kelsey Ash picked up a two-out RBI single that scored Bethany Rodriguez. The Blue Knights tied the game in the top of the third when Danielle Sedia would steal home. The Lightning would score the go-ahead and winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning when with the bases loaded and two outs, Ashley Falcon would reach base via an error by Danielle Orender. Ash would dent home plate on the play, giving Lehman a 2-1 lead, an advantage the Lightning would not relinquish.

Offensively for Lehman in the game one win, Ash finished 2-for-3 with a double, single, run scored, and a run batted in. Rodriguez, Vania Cadet, and Genesis Batista had the other three Lightning hits as each picked up one single apiece. For the Blue Knights, Sedia finished 1-for-4 with a single, a run scored, and two stolen bases.

Game two of the evening saw Martinez get the start again for the Lightning but she would not be as effective as she was in the opener, as she took the loss by hurling four innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits while walking five and striking out two. Racine Brown pitched the final two innings for Lehman and she gave up eight runs (four earned). Maynes picked up the win for Mount St. Mary's in game two with a complete-game shutout, hurling six innings and allowing no runs on four hits while fanning 12.

Offensively for the Blue Knights in game two, Christine DelPiano finished 1-for-3 with a homerun, a walk, two runs scored and a run batted in, and Sarah Johnson would finish 1-for-4 with a single, two runs scored, and a walk. Claribel Herrera doubled and singled in the nightcap for Lehman College, and Natalie Martinez and Kelsey Ash each picked up one single apiece for the Lightning in game two.

Lehman will return to action Friday afternoon as the Lightning will finish up their CUNY portion of the 2010 season with a doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets of New York City College of Technology, with start-time of the first game still to-be-announced.
