LEHMAN SOFTBALL FALLS IN PAIR OF NON-CONFERENCE GAMES TO POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

The Lehman College softball team (2-15 Overall, 0-6 CUNYAC) dropped a pair of non-conference games on Thursday evening, falling to the Fighting Blue Jays of Polytechnic University by scores of 16-2 and 12-0 at the South Field in the Bronx. The losses were the ninth and tenth straight defeats for the Lightning.

 

In game one of the evening, Laura Buzzard got the start for Polytechnic University and she picked up a win, hurling a complete game (five innings) and falling just one out shy of a shutout, as she allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits while walking four and striking out five. Natalie Martinez took the loss for Lehman College as she pitched five innings and gave up 12 earned runs.

 

At the dish for the Fighting Blue Jays in game one it was Corrine Fitzgibbons hitting a homerun and finishing 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two runs batted in, and two walks. Katie Jo Sunday also had a phenomenal game, finishing 3-for-4, hitting a single, a double, and a homerun while denting home plate three times and driving in four runs. For the Lightning, Kelsey Ash picked up a double and a single while driving in two runs and Natalie Martinez singled and walked in the loss.

 

Racine Brown got the game two start for the Lightning and she took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs while giving up 11 hits, walking four batters, and striking out four. Miranda Merilli pitched a perfect game in the nightcap for Polytechnic University, as she hurled five innings and didn't allow a single baserunner while striking out 11.

 

The Fightning Blue Jays did most of their damage in the early stages of the second game, plating three runs in the first inning, five more in the second inning, and four more in the third to account for their 12 runs. Fitzgibbons singled twice, scored three runs and drove in three, and Ryan Graybill singled twice and scored three runs as well.

 

The Lightning will return to action on Saturday afternoon as Lehman College will welcome the Bloodhounds of John Jay College to the South Field for a doubleheader, with the first game getting underway at noon.
