OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Five matches. Five wins. Zero games surrendered to the opponent.
The Lehman women's volleyball team is in the midst of its best stretch of the season and it seems regardless of opponent, the team is finding a way to win.
“If you don't like the way Lehman is playing right now, you don't like volleyball,” said an obviously elated head coach Wolfgang Lucena.
The Lightning's latest pair of triumphs came as part of a tri-match held at Old Westbury and featured 3-0 wins for the Lightning over the host Panthers and the St. Joseph's Bears.
Lehman stormed out of the gate versus St. Joe's, taking the first game 25-12 before following up with 25-19 and 25-15 wins in the second and third games. Senior
Gerri-Ann Martin was the attacking star, tallying 13 kills with a .524 hitting percentage to go along with nine digs and four service aces.
Shari Quiles recorded eight kills,
Jennifer Winkler notched five and 10 digs, and setter
Jasmine Bermudez handed out 16 assists.
In the second match of the day the 12-6 Panthers posed a stiffer challenge, but the Lightning prevailed just the same, taking the encounter 25-22, 26-24, 25-15. This time it was Quiles who led the team in kills with nine while Martin slammed seven kills. Martin, Winkler, and Bermudez each recorded 10 digs with Bermudez also putting up 23 assists. Junior
Racine Brown was a terror from the service line with seven aces on the afternoon.
The Lightning will see a familiar face on Wednesday evening as the team returns home for its second match in a week with St. Joseph's (BK) at 7 p.m.
