The Lehman Lightning softball team will have to wait at least another week for a chance to gain its next CUNYAC win after it was beaten soundly, 19-2 and 18-4, by visiting Hunter College in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader in the Bronx.
The Hawks took the first game behind a dominant pitching performance by freshman Angelica Iacovetti, who struck out the first nine batters to face her and didn't allow a hit until
Toni Angel Puya's solid single to centerfield in the fifth inning. Hunter received big games at the plate from Megan McKenna (3-4, 4 RBIs), Iacovetti (2-3, 3 RBIs) and Nicole Bianco (2-2, 3 RBIs).
Junior hurler
Natalie Martinez absorbed most of the damage for the Lightning to fall to 1-3 on the season. The Lightning defense, which committed five errors, did not hold up its end of the bargain, but Martinez didn't help her own cause either by issuing 14 walks.
Game two featured much of the same for the Lightning as Hunter posted multiple run innings over the first four frames, including back-to-back six spots in the second and third innings. Sophomore Sophia Ponce was the hitting star for the Hawks, as the Bronx native drove home four runs. Julia Lipovac enjoyed a 3-for-4 night, while Iacovetti, Arielle Zieff and Christina Baker each knocked in a pair of runs.
For the Lightning, Puya registered the big blow in the bottom of the third, smacking a triple to score
Genesis Batista and
Jelsey Cox.
Senior
Lakeisha Gordon took the loss for Lehman.
The Lightning travels out to Long Island on Saturday afternoon for its next contest, a doubleheader tilt with SUNY Farmingale scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
