The Lehman softball team continued to be plagued by one bad inning on Tuesday afternoon, allowing visiting Baruch College to score 11 runs in the third to break open what was a close contest during the first of two games between the two teams in the Bronx.
The big inning catapulted the Bearcats to a 12-0 five-inning win, which they then followed up with a 10-3 victory in the second game to improve to 13-15 overall, 10-2 in the CUNYAC.
Lehman dropped to 4-20 overall and 4-10 in the CUNYAC and has now completed the conference portion of its schedule with three games left to play until the CUNYAC Championships begin next week.
Trailing 1-0 after a first inning RBI double by Ashley Brandow, a deficit that could have been greater had it not been for Lightning starter
Genesis Batista wiggling out of a bases loaded jam in the second, the roof caved in for Lehman starting with the first batter of the third, Idelissa Lluveras.
Baruch's senior from the Bronx led off the nightmare frame with a home run to center for a somewhat innocent 2-0 lead. However, following Lluveras' clout, the Bearcats nearly batted around twice, using six hits, three Lehman errors, and numerous walks and wild pitches to put the game out of reach with starter Nicole Flint mowing down the Lightning batters.
Flint tossed all five frames to pick up the win for the Bearcats, allowing only a single hit to
Nicole Pinero, while striking out nine.
Lightning reliever
Lakeisha Gordon did an enviable job for Lehman after replacing Batista, recording the final out of the third before tossing two unblemished frames.
Baruch sent Flint back out to start the second game of the doubleheader, and the sophomore from Brentwood, New York picked up where she left off in game one, tossing three more scoreless innings before handing a 9-0 lead off to Olivia Auman.
The Lehman batters would not be denied with a second straight shortened game ready to be enforced, however, as they pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game alive. Hits by
Toni Angel Puya,
Luz Garcia and
Nicole Pinero, combined with two Baruch errors, allowed the Lightning to play on for another two innings.
Baruch would add one final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Carmen Pagan-Colon for the final margin.
