BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team beat visiting Staten Island on Tuesday afternoon, 3-1, firmly entrenching the Lightning in fourth place in the CUNYAC with a 5-2 mark. CSI remains in fifth place, at 2-5. Set scores were 26-24, 25-22, 20-25, and 25-18.

In the first set, CSI held a 15-12 lead before a 6-1 run gave the Lightning the advantage. However, CSI rallied, and actually served at set point, at 24-22. But Lehman junior Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) recorded a kill, giving service back to the Blue and Gold. Sophomore Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) promptly served up a pair of aces, before a CSI hitting error ended the first set with victory to the Lightning.

The second set was just as competitive, despite Lehman never trailing. The third set saw the Dolphins win the final ten consecutive points, and 12 of the final 13, to claim its sole win.

In the fourth and conclusive set, Lehman led 19-18 after CSI rallied for three straight points. Lehman Head Coach Wolfgang Lucena took a timeout to rally his troops, and they responded with six straight points to win the match.

On the evening, the Lightning were led by sophomore Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman ) and Aquino, who each had 12 kills. Freshman setter Imani Dubois (Bronx, N.Y./JP Taravella) contributed 29 assists, 12 digs, and seven service aces. Sophomore libero Julia Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) was the defensive star with 13 digs.

The Lightning continue their homestand on Thursday night, hosting the College of New Rochelle at 6 p.m., and the College of Mt. St. Vincent at 8 p.m.
