BRONX, N.Y. - Visiting Polytechnic Institute of New York University swept a doubleheader on Tuesday evening, taking the first game 13-0 in five innings behind a one-hitter from starter Miranda Mirelli, before taking the second game, as well, 6-2.

The Fighting Blue Jays' Christi Bruni set the tone for the first game, slamming a grand slam in the first inning, as NYU Poly scored multiple runs in every inning but the second.  Bruni finished 3-for-4, while teammate Lacey Slamsoe blasted a solo home run of her own.

Merilli was dominant on the mound for NYU Poly, carrying  a perfect game over the first three innings before Janet Ortiz broke through for Lehman with a base hit through the left side of the infield.  The Poly righty fanned eight in her five innings of work.

Sheila San Andres suffered the loss for Lehman, but was not helped out by a defense that committed nine errors behind her.

The Lightning bounced back with a much crisper performance in the second game as starter Natalie Martinez threw well over her seven innings of work.

NYU Poly led 4-0 through four innings thanks to a three-run third which was highlighted by Corine Fitzgibbons two-run double.  Lehman got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI base hit by Vania Cadet.

After the Blue Jays pushed their lead to 6-1, the Lightning refused to go quietly in the bottom of the seventh.  Toni Angel Puya started things off with a single to right and eventually stole second.  Jelsey Cox went down swinging but Mayra Guablocho got aboard on an error by Fitzgibbons at first base as Lehman began to threaten.   San Andreas then beat out a potential double play grounder to score a run before Cadet ended the game by popping out to the pitcher.

Overall the Lightning managed six hits against Poly's hard-throwing righty Brianna Feist, including three by Puya, who scored both Lehman runs on the night.  Cadet, San Andres and Genesis Batista picked up the Lightning's other three hits.

In addition to making solid contact in the second game, the Lightning also flashed some leather with Ortiz snaring a scorching line drive off the bat of Megan Moran in the third inning and Batista making a full-out diving catch behind first base of Karina Amaro's bloop in the fourth.

With the two losses Lehman now sits at 2-6 with an away contest against College of New Rochelle scheduled for Thursday.
