BRONX, N.Y. - It would be hard for the Lehman softball team to put forth a more Jekyl and Hyde performance than it did on Monday night against visiting York College.

What would kindly be described as a fielding nightmare in the first game as the team committed 11 errors in losing 14-8, quickly turned in the opposite direction for the second game as the Lightning rebounded to hammer the Cardinals 21-1 while making only two errors.

Lehman's fielding woes seemed to hit the team out of nowhere in the first game.

Following a tidy first inning where starter Natalie Martinez induced three routine groundouts, the Lightning self-destructed in the field during the second inning, committing eight errors as the Cardinals scored eight runs.

To the Lightning's credit they bounced back to make a game of it, scoring three runs in the third and two more in the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-5.  However, York answered with six more runs over the final two innings to put the game out of reach.

In scoring eight runs the Lightning collected nine hits with Martinez going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Toni Angel Puya also collecting two hits and an RBI.  Martinez was tagged with the loss on the mound but was only charged for three earned runs in her seven innings of work.

The Lightning turned its frustration over the first game into an offensive explosion in the second game, blasting 19 hits overall.  Every Lehman starter had at least one hit with Martinez going 4-for-4; Ashley Williams 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs; Janet Ortiz 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a well-struck extra base hit that nearly left the yard; and Sheila San Andres going 3-for-5.

San Andres was also the beneficiary of her teammates' battery of York starter Michelle DeLeon as she picked up her second win of the season.

Lehman leaves the comforts of the South Field for its next two games, a doubleheader against Hunter College on Wednesday.
