BRONX, N.Y. - Since day one when head coach Claudio Barbieri took the reins at Lehman College he stressed the importance of wanting to see steady progress with his team.

Earlier in the week he was rewarded with the team's first win over Brooklyn College in five years, a win that gave the Lightning more wins than a year ago.

And on Wednesday afternoon on the South Field, the team broke through for its signature win under Barbieri, a 5-2 defeat of Baruch College in the second game of their conference doubleheader.  The Lightning fell in the first game 10-2.

Lehman's statement performance came against Baruch ace Nicole Flint, who came into the day with a 7-4 record and 2.95 ERA.

Janet Ortiz got the Lightning on the board in the top of the first, blasting her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to give Lehman the 1-0 lead.

Lightning starter Sheila San Andres kept Baruch at bay until the bottom of the third when Toniann Donde's double chased home Melanie Pellegrino to tie the game.  The Bearcats would go ahead in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and a Lehman error.

Stifled since that first inning, the Lightning went to work in the sixth.  Ortiz singled to begin the inning and moved to second two batters later when Genesis Batista reached on an error by Donde at third base.  Jelsey Cox then doubled to score Ortiz and Batista and put the Lightning in front 3-2.

An error by Pellegrino at short on a ball put in play by Toni Angel Puya allowed Cox to score, pushing the lead to 4-2.  Ashley Williams capped the scoring with a double to right to chase home Cox with the Lightning's fifth run.

From there the Lightning played two flawless innings behind San Andres, as the Lehman righty set down the next five Bearcats to face her before walking Chelsea DeGuzman with two outs in the seventh.  She regained her composure, however, to set down Donde on a fly ball to right to end the game and preserve the upset.

Earlier in the day the Lightning gave an indication of what happens when their gloves fail them as the team committed six errors behind starter Natalie Martinez.  Ortiz picked up two hits and Cox added her first home run of the season, a two-run blast, in the loss.

Lehman will play its final conference doubleheader of the season against John Jay on Friday as it looks to add to its 3-7 CUNYAC record.
