Women's Soccer Claims First CUNYAC Victory

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - History was on the side of the Lehman College women's soccer squad today, as the Lightning captured its first ever CUNY Athletic Conference victory, beating host Brooklyn College, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon. Lehman is now 2-2-0 overall, with an even 1-1-0 count in the CUNYAC. BC is 0-2-0.

In a matchup of two first-year programs, play was tight throughout. The first half saw balanced play, with BC taking more shots, 5-3, despite Lehman having more corner kicks, 2-0.

Finally, in the 69th minute of the game, Samantha Dias (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) scored on a free kick for the game's only goal.

In goal, Melanie Varillas (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) was superb, making five saves to earn the shutout. It was her first game in goal this season.

Next up for Lehman is a match with Bronx rival Mt. St. Vincent, on Saturday September 15. The match will be played at Lehman's South Field beginning at 12 noon.
