BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking, 3-1, decision to The City College of New York on Saturday afternoon. The Lightning scored the only goal of the first half but the Beavers countered by scoring three unanswered goals in the second.
With the loss, Lehman (8-6, 1-4 CUNYAC) has now been eliminated from post-season consideration. CCNY (9-6, 3-2), meanwhile, has all but assured a CUNYAC Championships bid.
The Lightning's sole goal came on a set piece. Sophomore Samantha Dias (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) took a corner kick from the CCNY keeper's left, and crossed the ball into the box, to the feet of classmate Juliana Generoso (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle). The Lightning's leading scorer then settled the ball down, and found an empty net in front of her, giving Lehman a 1-0 lead, just 15:58 into the match.
In the second half, the tide turned in CCNY's favor as the Beavers broke through for three straight goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Melanie Varillas (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) played spectacularly in goal, making 12 of her 16 saves in the second stanza.
Lehman will conclude the season on Wednesday, October 23, when the Lightning host Medgar Evers College on South Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Lehman will celebrate Senior Day, honoring the five seniors who will be playing their final match for the Blue and Gold during a pre-game ceremony.
