BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's and women's swimming and diving team fell to Bronx rival Maritime College on Monday night, in action in the APEX Pool. The women's team was defeated, 136-88, while the men fell short, 148-93. Junior Ramon Peralta's triple winning effort kept the Lightning's men close, but it was not enough as the men suffered their first loss of the season.
The men are now 2-1 on the year, while the women are 1-3-1.
The Lightning were neck and neck with the Privateers early, but Maritime would pull away in the end to earn the win.
The women were led by a pair of seniors, as Aytaissa Estime-Kirkpatrick (New York, N.Y./LS3) won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 13:52.34. Classmate Adriana Navarrete (Lima, Peru/Law and Community Service) took first place in the 50-free, finishing in 28.07.
Freshman Joannie Vargas (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.) won both the one and three meter diving events.
For the men, Peralta (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership Academy) had a big night by winning the 100-back and 50-free races. He was also a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay team. Sophomore Anthony Preda (Long Island City, N.Y./Basha) earned first place in the 200-free and was also a member of the winning 200-medley relay team.
The women's team will return to the APEX Pool on Friday, November 22, for a CUNY Athletic Conference showdown with Hunter College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
