Softball Drops Double Dip at John Jay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y. - The Lehman College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to CUNYAC foe John Jay on Thursday afternoon, 13-5, and 8-0. Both teams have struggled to play games so far this season, as John Jay is now 2-4 overall, and 2-2 inside the CUNY Athletic Conference, while Lehman is 0-5, and 0-4.

In the opener, senior short stop Janet Ortiz (Shady Hills, Fla./River Ridge) and junior second baseman Cynthia Vasquez (Queens, N.Y./CTEA) accounted for all five Lehman hits. Ortiz batted 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a two-run home run, while Vasquez went 2-for-4 with one run scored.

John Jay posted five runs in the first to jump out to an early lead. In the top of the third, senior right fielder Ashley Falcon (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.) and Vasquez started the Lehman frame by hitting consecutive singles, which plated Falcon. Later in the inning, sophomore first baseman Ashley Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership Academy) reached base on a John Jay fielding error, which allowed Falcon to score.

Ortiz and junior centerfielder Jelsey Cox (Queens Village, N.Y./Campus Magnet) both scored in the Lightning fifth to keep the game at bay. Ortiz started the frame with a double to left and Cox reached base on a John Jay miscue. After a double steal, Ortiz scored on a Williams RBI groundout, which advanced Cox to third, before Cox stole home to score Lehman's third run of the contest.

The final runs for Lehman came in top of the sixth, courtesy of an Ortiz two-run home run. With two outs, Vasquez reached base on a fielding error ahead of Ortiz' first home run of the season.

In the second game, Cox registered the lone Lehman hit with a first inning single up the middle.

Lehman looks for their first win of the season when they travel to Patchogue, N.Y., to take on St. Joseph's College in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 20. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
