BRONX, N.Y. – After bring postponed twice in a span of three days, the Lehman College softball team was able to host CUNY Athletic Conference foe Hunter College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, and dropped both ends, 10-6, and 13-0. Today was the final day of the regular season, and Lehman is now locked into the number six seed in the upcoming 2013 CUNYAC/Applebee's Softball Championships.
In Game One tonight, the first three innings went very quickly, with both teams exhibiting great defense in support of great pitching. Then, in the fourth inning, everything changed.
Hunter got two runs on the top of the fourth on three hits. But Lehman responded.
Senior Janet Ortiz (Shady Hills, Fla./River Ridge), playing in her final home game as a member of the Lightning, dropped a bunt down the third base line and hustled down to first, beating the throw by a step. After two infield ground balls that advanced her to third, she scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Ashley Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership). Freshman third baseman Jona Kerluku (Ozone Park, N.Y./CTEA) and junior pitcher Sheila San Andres (Woodhaven, N.Y./CTEA) both singled, loading the bases for junior outfielder Jelsey Cox (Queens Village, N.Y./Campus Magnet). Cox proceeded to crack a grand slam to left field, easily clearing the fence, and clearing the bases. After four innings, Lehman led 5-2.
Hunter got two runs back in the top of the fifth, pulling to within one. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Ortiz banged her seventh homerun of the season, a solo shot to left, and Lehman led 6-4.
Forward to the top of the seventh, where Hunter got six runs, on five hits, to steal the victory.
In Game Two, Ortiz took the circle and struggled, allowing 17 hits, as Hunter scored in all five innings. At the plate, Ortiz had both of Lehman's hits, a single, and a double.
The upcoming CUNYAC Championships will begin on Wednesday, May 1.
