Lehman Women's Volleyball Rallies for 3-2 Win Over Cedar Crest

BRONX, N.Y. – The 2013 women's volleyball season opened in grand fashion, as the Lightning (1-0) came-from-behind for a thrilling 3-2 victory over visiting Cedar Crest College, in a match held in the Main Gym of the APEX at Lehman College.

In the fifth and final set, the Lightning jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on the service of junior Suada Ibric (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill). Junior Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and sophomore Imani Dubois (Bronx, N.Y./J.P. Taravella) each had kills. The Lightning would then take a 10-6 lead on a CCC attack error, before the Falcons rallied to knot the score at 10-10. Again, with Suada serving, Aquino had a pair of kills with a Suada service ace, and the Lightning went up 14-10. After three CCC points, senior Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) knocked home the last of her 11 kills for the win

On the afternoon, Aquino led all players with 15 kills, while Zabelaj was the only other player for either team to manage double figures in kills. Junior Julia Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had a game-high 25 digs, as junior Jessica Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Theatre) had a game-high 33 assists.

Lehman College will return to action on Tuesday, September 3, hosting Maritime at 7:00 p.m.
