Gonzalez Posts Eight Service Aces to Pace Women's Volleyball in 3-0 Victory

Bronx, N.Y. - The Lehman College women's volleyball team registered 21 service aces and defeated local rival Maritime College 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-12) to start the season off 2-0 for the first time since 2008. Junior Jessica Gonzalez registered eight of the team's 21 service aces to lead the Lightning.

The Lightning dominated play by getting 21 kills, while the Privateers (0-1) were only able to amass eight. Junior Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), the reigning CUNYAC/Applebee's Player of the Week, paced the team with six digs and also added two service aces. Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Theatre) had two digs of her own. Junior Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) helped lead the Lightning to victory with five service aces and four digs.

The Lightning managed 19 assists and 22 digs total. Senior Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) had a very productive evening with six kills, two service aces, two digs, and one assist.

The Lightning's next home game will be on Tuesday, September 10, when they host St. Joseph's College of Long Island. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
