Freshman goalkeeper
Stephanie Gonzalez (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) kept the match scoreless in the first half, by stopping all six shots she faced in the first 45 minutes of play. The Lightning tallied 17 shots in the first stanza, including five shots on goal, but could not capitalize on their opportunities.
Lehman's fortunes would change in the second half as freshman midfielder
Lillian Barreto (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) intercepted the ball, off a failed clear attempt by CCNY, and found Lopes (Venancio Aires, Brazil/Aparecida School) who launched the ball into the back of the net, to give the Lightning a 1-0 advantage, with 25:04 remaining in regulation. Less than a minute later, Generoso (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) continued Lehman's momentum by scoring her eight goal of the year to extend the Lightning's lead to 2-0.
CCNY provided some pressure by having four corner opportunities but Lehman's defense limited the Beavers to only four shots in the second half. The Lightning would go on to win the match, 2-0.
Gonzalez made eight saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season.
Lehman will be back in action on Wednesday, for another crucial CUNY Athletic Conference match, against John Jay on the South Field, at 5:00 p.m. It will be Senior Day and Lehman College will honor the student-athletes who will take the field for the final home match of their collegiate careers, with a brief ceremony before the match.
