Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – A goal by Lehman College freshman midfielder
Pamela Sanchez just 27 seconds into the match proved to be the difference, as the Lightning women's soccer team defeated John Jay, 1-0, on the South Field on Monday evening. With the victory, Lehman has now clinched the #3 seed in the upcoming CUNY Athletic Conference Championships.
After Sanchez (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) put Lehman (8-6-1, 4-2 CUNYAC) up 1-0 in the first minute, both teams had plenty of opportunities to score. In the 24
th minute, the Bloodhounds (3-14, 2-4 CUNYAC) had a shot in front that was denied by freshman goalkeeper
Stephanie Gonzalez (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton). In the 33
rd minute, the Lightning had a golden opportunity of their own as junior midfielder
Ana Lopes (Venancio Aires, Brazil/Aparecida School) executed a shot that narrowly hit the post to prevent the home team from extending the lead.
In the second half, John Jay had multiple opportunities to knot the score. In the 78
th minute, John Jay shot the ball on goal but Gonzalez was able to leap up and catch the ball before it went into the net. Gonzalez prevented another quality Bloodhounds' shot from going in as she slid down and made the save in the 82
nd minute.
Junior defender
Samantha Dias (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) and junior forward
Juliana Generoso (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) tallied back-to-back shots in the 83
rd minute but John Jay's goalkeeper stopped them both to keep her team in the match.
The Bloodhounds tilted momentum into their favor as their pressure in front of Lehman's net gave John Jay a corner opportunity in the 86
th minute. However, Lehman's strong defense prevented the Bloodhounds from recording a shot for the remainder of the match. The horn sounded and Lehman picked up the victory to clinch a spot in the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships.
Gonzalez stopped all seven shots she faced for her second consecutive shutout, and seventh of the season.
Tonight was senior night as Lehman College honored defenders Dias and
Melanie Varillas (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) with a ceremony prior to the match.
The Lightning will face either Brooklyn College or the College of Staten Island in the Semifinals of the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships. On Wednesday, the Lightning will conclude the regular season with a non-conference match against the Kings College, on the South Field, at 4:00 p.m.
