Box Score NEWARK, N.J. – The #7 Lehman College women's soccer team fell to host #2 Rutgers-Newark, 8-0, in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Metro/Upstate Championships, on Wednesday evening. Rutgers-Newark will now take on #3 Sage College in the semifinals as the Gators knocked off #6 the College of Staten Island, 3-2, in overtime.
The Lightning's (8-9-1) season has now come to an end but not without success. Lehman's eight wins this season ties a program record that was set back in its inaugural year, in 2012. This year, they qualified for the post-season for the first time in program history.
Lehman College head coach
Casey Melilli was very proud of her team's successful season. "It's pretty amazing," Melilli said. "They have been working hard and it felt great to compete in the post-season."
After getting off to a slow start in the first half, Lehman had more scoring chances in the second stanza. The Lightning had a golden opportunity to score in the 80
th minute as junior midfielder
Ana Lopes (Venancio Aires, Brazil/Aparecida School) rifled a shot from 15 yards out but was denied by the Scarlet Raiders' goalkeeper. "In the second half, I thought they played better," Melilli said. "It will build towards getting the team better for next season."
Freshman goalkeeper
Stephanie Gonzalez (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) stopped 11 shots for the Lightning.
