Softball Drops Doubleheader to Purchase

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College softball team dropped both ends of their doubleheader to Purchase College on Thursday evening on the South Field. The Lightning dropped the first game, 10-3, while the Panthers won the second, 11-3.

In the first game, the Lightning could not withstand the Panthers' offensive attack. Lehman was able to score their first run of the game thanks to a double from freshman Meghan Bravo (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) that scored senior pitcher Sheila San Andres (Woodhaven, N.Y./Construction Trade).

The Lightning were able to tack on two more runs in the fifth inning to shrink the deficit to 8-3. However, the Panthers scored two more insurance runs and were able to win the game, 10-3.

In the second game, the Lightning (2-4) struck early, as San Andres connected on a single that scored sophomore shortstop Jona Kerluku (Ozone Park, N.Y./Construction Trade), to put Lehman up 1-0. With senior outfielder Jelsey Cox (Queens Village, N.Y./Campus Magnet) at the plate, sophomore catcher Kyala Cruz (Brooklyn, N.Y./American Senior) was able to score on a wild pitch to extend Lehman's lead to 2-0.

In the fourth inning, the Panthers (2-0) answered with six runs, including a grand slam, to take a commanding lead.

In the fifth, Lehman had the bases loaded and one out when Cox sacrificed on a grounder to second that scored Cruz, to make it 8-3 Purchase.

The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, to seal the game by a score of 11-3.

Cruz went two for three in the game, while scoring two runs. San Andres and Cox each had a run batted in.

The Lightning will be back in action on Tuesday, March 25, when they travel to face Baruch College, for a pair of games, in the CUNY Athletic Conference opener. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
