Box Score 2 NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehman College softball team split a doubleheader with perennial CUNYAC powerhouse Baruch College, winning Game One, 14-12, before falling, 8-7, in the second game.
The Lightning are now 8-18 overall, and 2-6 in the CUNYAC, while the Bearcats are 3-13, and 3-7 in the conference. Baruch in sixth place in the league, and only one game ahead of Lehman.
In the opener, Lehman scored six unanswered runs in the final two innings to earn the come-from-behind win. In a game that featured plenty of offense, the Lightning were led by junior Ashley Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership), who lined her second homerun of the season to leftfield in the fifth inning. She later had key RBI groundouts in the sixth and seventh innings. Senior centerfielder Jelsey Cox (Queens Village, N.Y./Campus Magnet) had three hits, scored three times, and had two RBI, including the eventual game-winner. The Lightning had ten stolen bases in the seven inning game.
The Lightning had its five-game winning streak snapped in the second game, as Lehman trailed 8-3 after four innings, before rallying with a three-run fifth. A solo run in the sixth cut the lead to just a single run, setting up a dramatic seventh inning. With two out, senior pitcher Sheila San Andres (Woodside, N.Y./CTEA) singled up the middle. She got into scoring position with a stolen base, where she was stranded as the game ended. Freshman Imalay Rodriguez (Dominican Republic/Metropolitan) singled twice, scored twice, and had one RBI. Sophomore catcher Kyala Cruz (Brooklyn, N.Y./American Senior) also had a pair of hits, including an RBI triple in the sixth. Sophomore Jona Kerluku (Ozone Park, N.Y./CTEA) and San Andres each had a pair of hits, including RBI doubles in the fifth inning.
Lehman will next travel to face Brooklyn College on Saturday, April 19. The Bulldogs currently sit in second place in the CUNYAC.
Lehman is now 7-0 in games when scoring at least ten runs.
