Box Score 2 BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College softball team concluded the 2014 regular season on a high note, by winning both ends of a doubleheader against Yeshiva University, 10-5 and 11-1, on Friday afternoon on the South Field. The Lightning have now tripled their win total from a year ago, under first year head coach Now-Allah James.
Today marked Senior Day as pitcher Sheila San Andres (Woodhaven, N.Y./Construction Trade) and centerfielder Jelsey Cox (Queens Village, N.Y./Campus Magnet) took the field for the last home games of their collegiate careers. San Andres delivered a strong outing in the opening game, pitching a complete game, giving up no earned runs, and fanning nine batters to pick up her fourth victory of the season. Cox also ended her career on the South Field in good fashion by producing two hits in that game, including a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In Game Two, the Lightning (12-20) struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning, thanks to two-run doubles from junior first baseman Ashley Williams (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership Academy) and freshman third baseman Linda Resto (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.). Sophomore catcher Kyala Cruz (Brooklyn, N.Y./American Senior) tallied a single to drive in two runs during the home half of the third inning to extend Lehman's lead to 9-1.
Freshman pitcher Meghan Bravo (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) pitched a complete game of her own, scattering three hits and one earned run, and striking out nine hitters, for her eight win of the year.
The Lightning will now enter the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships as the #5 seed. Lehman will take on either Hunter or John Jay in the Quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 30.
