Softball Season Ends with 5-2 Loss in CUNYAC Championships

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Lehman College softball team dropped a hard fought game to John Jay College, 5-2, in the First Round of the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships. The opening round game was played on the campus of Brooklyn College. The Lightning are now eliminated from postseason play, and end the season with a 12-21 record.

The Lightning trailed 2-0 early, but in the top of the second inning, Lehman strung together three consecutive hits with two outs, capped off by first-year pitcher Meghan Bravo's (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) two-run double, which scored senior outfielder Sheila San Andres (Woodhaven, N.Y./Construction Trade) and freshman third baseman Linda Resto (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman H.S.).

In the fourth inning, the Lightning had a chance to blow the game open. Lehman had the bases loaded with only one out, but could not find another hit in the inning.

The score remained knotted at two until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Bloodhounds (9-25) tacked on three runs to take a 5-2 lead, and hung on to win the game by that score. In that inning, John Jay had only one base hit, but took advantage of two walks.

In the circle, Bravo pitched a complete game, giving up five earned runs on nine hits, while striking out three batters.

San Andres and Resto each had a pair of hits on the day, as Bravo had the only RBI.

In 2014, Lehman tripled their win total from a year ago. First year head coach Now-Allah James believes that the hard work from the student-athletes played a key role in Lehman's improvement and will also be a factor in building for next year. "We are going to be a great team in the future because of these student-athletes and their work ethic," James said. "I am going to miss our seniors… I am more proud of this team than any other team I have ever been a part of."
