STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by the College of Staten Island, on Tuesday evening. The men's team lost 139-87, while the women fell 146-71.
The Lehman men's team were led by a pair of juniors, as Jeremy Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Dreamyard Prep) and Anthony Preda (Long Island City, N.Y./Basha) were each double winners. They were members of the first place 200-medley relay team, finishing in 1:43.61. Sophomore Carlos Alonso (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and junior Abel Dupres were also members of the winning relay team. Preda was the top swimmer in the 50-free (23.20), while Guerra earned gold in the 100-free (51.92). Junior Enes Mernica (Bronx, N.Y./Belmont Prep) won a very competitive 1000-free race, as he completed the long distance event in 11:21.09, just over four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from CSI.
On the women's side, sophomore Victoria Michalatos (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) won the 100-free, by less than a second, completing the race in 1:03.64. Juniors Ericka Lewin (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) and Melody Ovalles (New York, N.Y./Community Health) each earned silver in three races. They were members of the second place 200-medley relay team, that finished the race in 2:12.78. Lewin also finished second in the 200 IM (2:59.60) and the 100-breast (1:27.78), while Ovalles had the second fastest time in the 50-free (29.14) and the 100-back (1:14.69).
The Lightning will travel to Baruch College to battle the Bearcats, in another CUNY Athletic Conference dual meet, on Friday. The first event is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.Â
