BRONX, N.Y. – It was a successful night for the Lehman College swimming and diving programs, as both teams earned victories over York College, in CUNY Athletic Conference action in the APEX Swimming Pool, on Tuesday evening. The women's team won, 100-90, while the men were victorious, 82-64.
The women were led by double winning efforts from freshman Angela Mejia (Bronx, N.Y.), sophomore Victoria Michalatos (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff), and junior Mosebopetan Oladele (Bronx, N.Y./A. Philip Randolph). The three of them were members of the first place 200-medley relay team, along with junior Melody Ovalles (New York, N.Y./Community Health), that completed the race in 2:10.10.
Mejia earned gold in the 50-free, finishing the race in 27.63. Oladele won the 100-free, making her way to the finish line just less than 10 full seconds ahead of the runner-up from York. Michalatos kept Lehman's momentum going, by earning first place in the 200-free, with a time of 2:25.56.
Sophomore Joannie Vargas (San Juan, P.R./Lehman H.S.) won the one meter diving event, earning nine more points for the Lightning.
On the men's side, the Lightning started off strong, thanks to the Lightning "A" team winning the 200-medley relay. Junior Enes Mernica (Bronx, N.Y./Belmont Prep) continued Lehman's momentum by earning gold in the 200-free, with a time of 1:59.76, almost a full minute better than the runner-up. Classmate Jeremy Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Dreamyard Prep) won the 200 IM, completing the race in 2:18.58.
Both Mernica and Guerra were members of the team who won the 200-medley relay, along with freshman Luis Genao (New York, N.Y./The College Academy) and classmate Francis Turbi (New York, N.Y./The College Academy).
Senior Christopher McKie (Brooklyn, N.Y./Valley Stream Christian Academy) won the 100-fly in 1:00.84, while junior Abel Dupres (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) won the 50-free. Freshman Joshua Teves (Long Island City, N.Y./Urban Assembly School for Media) won the one meter diving event.
The Lightning will return to the APEX Swimming Pool, on Thursday, for a non-conference dual meet, against William Paterson. It is Senior Day as Lehman College will honor the student-athletes, who are winding down their collegiate careers, with a brief ceremony prior to the start of the first event. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
