BRONX, N.Y. – It was a successful night for the Lehman College women's and men's swimming and diving programs, as both teams earned victories over Brooklyn College, in CUNY Athletic Conference action in the APEX Swimming Pool, on Wednesday evening. The women's team won, 113-105, while the men were victorious, 126-94.
It was a balanced effort on the women's side, as four student-athletes picked up victories in their events. Junior Mosebopetan Oladele (Bronx, N.Y./A. Philip Randolph) earned gold in the 100-free, completing the race in 1:12.52. Classmate Susana Perez (New York, N.Y./Community Health Academy) was the first to finish the 100-back, with a time of 1:21.68.
Sophomore Joannie Vargas (San Juan, P.R./Lehman H.S.) earned nine points for the Lightning by winning the one meter diving event. Classmate Meilyn Hernandez (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) earned a victory in the three meter diving event.
For the men, juniors Abel Dupres (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton), Jeremy Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Dreamyard Prep), and Anthony Preda (Long Island City, N.Y./Basha) were each triple winners. They teamed with sophomore Carlos Alonso (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) to form the first place Lightning "A" team in the 200-medley relay race (1:41.84).
Dupres also earned gold in the 50-free, with a time of 22:32, and the 100-back, completing the race in 56.20. Guerra finished first in the 200-free (1:58.56), and 100-free (51.65). Preda was the top swimmer in the 200 IM, completing the race in 2:08.71, and the 100-breast, with a time of 1:03.07. Alonso finished first in the 100-fly, in 58.46.
Junior Enes Mernica (Bronx, N.Y./Belmont Prep) earned victories in both long distance races. He finished the 1000-free in 12:03.70, and the 500-free in 5:33.42.
The Lightning will travel to the College of Staten Island to battle the Dolphins, in another CUNYAC meet, on Tuesday, at 5:00 p.m.
