Lehman is Primed for Championship Play

Lehman College comes into the CUNYAC women's soccer final as the number one seed and will face off against number two, the College of Staten Island at 2:00 PM on the Brooklyn College Field.  Earlier this season the Lightning defeated the Dolphins 5-1.   This will be the Lightning's first appearance in the CUNYAC championship game.  Lehman's women's soccer team has only been in existence since 2012.

"This CSI team will be a complete different from the squad we played in September," commented second year head coach Casey Melilli.  "They've added a player or two and changed their formation.  They are much more dangerous up top than most of the others teams in the conference."

In the first match-up, the Lightning prevailed 5-1.  Lehman jumped out on top 2-0 with goals from Lillian Berreto and Gredia Sanchez before the Dolphins cut the lead in half right before the half-time whistle.  But three minutes into the second half Berreto tallied her second of the afternoon to put the Lightning back on top by two goals.  Twenty minutes later Pamela Sanchez found the back of the net to extend the margin to 4-1.  Chelsea Harris rounded out the scoring in the 82nd minute.

The Lightning earned their way into the final by blowing out John Jay 5-0.  Harris tallied the first four goals of the game; two in each half.  It was the first time she ever netted four goals in a game.  Samantha Dias came up from her central defender position to finish off the scoring on a penalty shot in the 89th minute.  Goal keeper Stephanie Gonzalez posted the shut-out, her ninth of the season.

Lehman has now won their last four games by an aggregate score of 19-0.

CSI struggled with host Brooklyn but came away with a 1-0 victory.  However, the Dolphins are not strangers to the championship stage having played in the final each of the last three years only to come up short each time.
