Brooklyn, N.Y. – The #3 Lehman College women's soccer team put up a valiant effort to come back in the second half, but lost in the CUNYAC semifinals against the #2 College of Staten Island, 4-2, Wednesday night at the Brooklyn College Field.
Daisy Narvaez tallied a goal for the Lightning (8-8-1) in a losing effort, while
Daisy Gomez netted a goal on a
Gredia Sanchez-Espejel pass. This is only the second time that CSI has allowed two goals or more in a game. Goalkeeper
Linda Resto made two stops in net.
In the first half, the Dolphins (11-4-2) jumped out in the first minutes of play when Jennifer Cosenza scored at 2:01 for an early 1-0 advantage. Krystina Rodriguez then added a goal at 13:13 on a redirect in front after a corner kick, then notched her second goal of the game at 17:04 to put CSI up 3-0. The Lightning had some nice chances on free kicks, but Nicole Mignone, the CSI keeper made great stops as they headed into intermission.
The second half saw Lehman get back in the game as Narvaez snagged a rebound off the cross bar and scored at 55:41 to chip the deficit to 3-1. Less than two minutes later, Gomez retrieved a G. Sanchez free kick to bring it to 3-2 as the Lightning looked for an equalizer.
In the 68th minute, Staten Island pushed their lead back up to two goals when Krista Anson corralled a touch pass from Sandor and beat the keeper. Lehman would have a few chances later in the half, but could not reach the back of the net any more.
The loss ends the season for the Lightning, who at one point won four straight matchups near the home stretch to earn a number-three seed in the conference into the semifinals.
