Bronx, NY – The Lehman College basketball teams will once again host a Coaches vs Cancer Tournament This year the tournament will be contested on Thursday and Friday, December 29-30.
On the women's side the action gets underway at 1:00 pm on Thursday as Alvernia will battle York (PA) in the opener. At 3:00 pm the Lehman women's team will battle perennial NCAA Tournament participant SUNY IT. On Friday the losers of the two contests will meet in the consolation game beginning at 2:00 pm. The winners will meet in the final scheduled for 4:00 pm.
The young Alvernia Crusaders feature a roster with no seniors and only one junior. Liv Andrefski and Maya Cooper lead the way with 11.3 and 10.7 scoring averages. The Crusaders are still looking for their first win of the season and come to the Bronx with a 0-10 mark. The Spartans of York (PA) snapped a two game skid two weeks ago, their last contest, and now stand at 6-3. Katie Wagner and Morgan Kuehne are both averaging double figures for the Spartans. Lehman's opening round opponent comes to the APEX with a perfect 8-0 mark. Tonight starts a seven game stretch that the Wildcats will play away from the confines of their home court in Utica, NY. Look for Stevie Ray and Kristaijah Jackson to lead the Wildcats. Ray, the North Eastern Athletic Conference reigning Player of the Week in averaging 25 points per night. Jackson is adding 17 points and 9 rebounds per game. The Lighting are being led by
Amely Del Rosario,
Lynda Fields and
Krystal Pearson. Del Rosario is averaging 27 points while Fields and Pearson are chipping in 21 and 15 points per game respectively.
On the men's side, Steven's Tech will battle Castleton State (VT) at 5:00 pm with Lehman taking on Thomas College (ME) at 7:00 pm. The men's tournament has pre-set games. On day two of the tournament, Stevens will take on Thomas College at noon and Lehman and Castleton will tangle at 6:00 pm.
Steven's stands at 5-1 and has not played a game in more than three weeks. They own double digit victories over three CUNYAC squads (Brooklyn, CSI, and Baruch). Four players are averaging double figures for the Ducks. Patrick Barron leads the way with 1 16.3 points per game average. Thomas and Castleton, both out of the North Atlantic Conference sit atop the NAC. Thomas is 5-3:3-0 while Castleton is 7-2:41. Tyheem Simon leads the Thomas Terriers with a 23.6 points per game average. The senior from Far Rockaway, NY. Coach Hensley can also turn to Joran Derosby and Carlos Gonzalez were are both averaging 11 points per contest. Chad Copeland's 18.3 points per game leads the Spartans. Teammates Tondi Mushandu and Jordan Nelson are also averaging double figures. The Lightning stand at 4-5.
Andrew Utate's 16 points per game leads Lehman. Newcomer
Damian Bellamy is chipping in just under 13 points per night and
John Brens and Ed Pascual are also averaging double figures.
