Box Score 2 BRONX, NY --- The Lehman College softball lost two games in their CUNYAC double-header to visiting John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Tuesday evening at the South Field, falling 9-3 and 14-13 respectively.
Game two was an instant classic between the Lightning of Lehman (1-11) and the Bloodhounds of John Jay (4-2), as three times the hosts rallied from deficits of four or more runs. John Jay got the scoring started in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of a Lehman miscue to score four runs, three of them unearned. The Lightning struck back in the bottom of the third when senior center fielder
Chariny Graciano doubled to left to score junior right fielder
Micharey Almanzar to get Lehman on the board. The very next at-bat, junior third baseman
Linda Resto doubled in Graciano, pulling the Lightning to within two. Finally, junior pitcher
Meghan Bravo homered to right center, scoring Resto and tying the game at four runs each.
The Bloodhounds answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth and another in the top of the fifth, as Lehman came to the plate down 9-5. But freshman catcher
Natasha Minier got the biggest hit of her career thus far, driving in two runs off a triple to right field and later scoring off an error. Later in the inning, junior left fielder
Arlette Martinez hit an RBI single to right field, tying the game at 9-9.
In the top of the seventh, Bravo struck out the first two Bloodhounds, but John Jay took advantage of two fielding errors and two passed balls to score five runs, giving them a seeming insurmountable 14-9 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lehman scored off an error, then loaded the bases with no outs on a single by Martinez to shallow right center. Graciano grounded into a fielder's choice force-out at home plate. Resto hit into a RBI groundout to the pitcher for the second run, followed by Bravo singling through the left side to drive in two more runs and pulling Lehman to within one. But the Bloodhounds were able to close out when Nieves struck outs swinging for the final score of 14-13.
Bravo had a strong outing for Lehman, striking out six Bloodhounds in seven innings and allowing just three earned runs. At the plate, Bravo went three-for-three with four RBI, two walks and two runs scored including her home run. Martinez and Almanzar each had three hits.
John Jay sophomore pitcher Lisa Pellegrino earned her second win of the day, coming in in relief to strike out three in three innings and allowing no earned runs. Senior left fielder Amber Villegas went three-for-three at the plate with three runs scored.
Earlier during game one, Bravo recorded eight strikeouts while Martinez had two hits. Resto and Nieves both drove in runs in the 9-3 loss. Â
Lehman is back on the field on Thursday when they travel to Brooklyn College to take on the Bulldogs in a 5:00 p.m. double-header.
