Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team defeated Medgar Evers, 3-0, for the second time this season, in a game played in the auxiliary gym at the Apex on Thursday. The scores of this non-conference match were, 25-11, 25-23, 25-11.
The Lightning came out on fire, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in set one on four consecutive aces from
Samantha Delgado. After the Cougars got on the board, Lehman made is 5-1 when Delgado setup
Caitlin Vernon for a kill. Later in the set, up 13-7, Lehman got six straight points on a Medgar Evers error and five straight aces from
Paulette Sepulveda. The Lightning took the set, 25-11.
The Cougars took a 4-0 lead in set two before Lehman responded. They got kills from Vernon and Sepulveda and another ace from Delgado and pulled within, 4-3. A
Sandra Izaguirre serve eventually tied the game at 5-5. From there, Medgar used a 7-1 run to grab a 12-6 lead and seemingly take control of the set. Lehman would fight back and even the set at 17-all on an ace from Izaguirre. The Lightning closed out the set with a 5-1 run to take it, 25-23.
The third set was a mirror of the first early on. Delgado served up the first four points for Lehman. A
Yzaira Galan kill gave the set to the Lightning, 25-11.
In the win, Delgado had 21 assists and eight aces. Sepulveda added four aces and led the squad with 13 digs and seven kills.
With the victory, the Lightning improved to 4-17 overall. The team has won two-straight contests. The Lehman College women's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, October 14, when they face Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The first serve is slated for 1PM.
