Staten Island, N.Y. – The Lehman College volleyball team played hard and earned a split of a pair of matches at the College of Staten Island on Monday. The Lightning fell to the Dolphins, 3-1 and rebounded with a win over CCNY, 3-2.
The match with CSI went four sets before the Dolphins prevailed. The scores were, 25-16, 25-13, 25-27 and 25-20. After dropping the first two sets, Lehman rebounded to win the third. They opened the set with a 4-1 run. The Dolphins took the first point, but the next four went to Lehman on a kill from
Sandra Izaguirre and strong serves from
Paulette Sepulveda. CSI would quickly regain the lead and then eventually have match point, 25-24. However, Lehman responded with three straight points to win the set. A bad set and a couple of strong serves from Izaguirre accounted for the points. CSI took the final set to seal the match. Izaguirre had 11 digs and eight kills.
Samantha Delgado gave out 16 assists.
Lehman responded in their second game with a 3-2 win over CCNY. Lehman took the first two sets before the Beavers responded by capturing the next two. The Lighting took the fifth set to earn the victory. The scores of the sets were 25-13, 25-16, 17-25, 17-25 and 15-13.
Delgado got Lehman off to a 4-0 lead in set one with four serves that led to two aces, a kill and an error. Later in the set, a
Caitlin Vernon kill gave the Lightning a double-digit lead, 16-6. A Sepulveda ace clinched the set.
Set two was eventually tied at 7-7. Sepulveda rattled off four straight points with a couple of aces and a pair of Beavers' errors. A Francesca Acevedo serve led to a kill from Izaguirre that clinched the set, 25-17.
CCNY took the next two sets, forcing the all-important, fifth set. The set was back and forth early on with the score going level at 10-10. The Lightning scored the next four points to go up, 14-10. The serves of
Ariana Pradieu led to four straight errors by CCNY. After the Beavers scored three points to pull within 14-13, Lehman won the match on a Sepulveda kill. She finished with 22 digs and four aces. Delgado totaled a double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs.
With the split, the Lehman College volleyball team is now 3-17 overall and 2-4 in the CUNYAC. They return to action on Thursday, October 12, when they host Medgar Evers College at 7PM in the auxiliary gym.
