Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Defensive Effort Catapults Lightning to Six Point Win over Valley Forge

Bronx, N.Y. – On a night when the Lehman women's basketball team struggled to make baskets, it was a familiar tactic, the full court press, that keyed a second-half comeback and lifted the Lighting to a 64-58 victory over Valley Forge in the Bronx on Wednesday.  With the victory, Lehman improved to 3-2 on the season.

The Lightning struggled to hit their shots in the first quarter, trailing 15-4 after the first ten minutes.  However, they opened the second quarter with an 11-0 run to tie the game at 15-all.  The full court press led to four turnovers in that stretch, while Lehman got four points from Aliyah Dorsett, two each from Ayanna Behagen and Lisa Fields and three from Lynda Fields.  The Patriots led at the half, 30-26.

Lehman would trail for the early part of the third quarter, but a fast break bucket from Lillybeth Garcia tied the game at 35-35.  Garcia put Lehman up on the subsequent possession, 38-35, with a three-pointer.  The lead got as large as nine points in the quarter when Eugenie Maguire buried a foul shot with 1:35 left.  The Lightning led 47-40 after three.

A three-point-play by Behagen at 7:35 in the fourth quarter made the score, 54-40, and gave Lehman its largest lead of the game, 14 points.  Valley Forge got back into the game and got as close as two points, with 0:25 remaining.  Clutch free throws from the Fields sisters and Dorsett helped seal the 64-58 triumph.

In the win, Lehman forced 39 turnovers.  Lynda Fields led all scorers with 20 points.  Behagen just missed a triple-double, totaling 14 points, 13 steals (a career high) and eight rebounds.  Maguire had 11 rebounds with seven coming off the offensive glass.

The Lehman College women's basketball team returns to action on Friday, December 1 when they open CUNYAC play at CCNY.  The tip-off is scheduled for 5PM.
