Box Score Staten Island, N.Y. -The Lehman College women's soccer team lost a hard-fought, 2-0 game to the College of Staten Island in the CUNYAC Championship on Saturday in Staten Island. The Dolphins also beat the Lightning, 2-0, in their regular-season match in the Bronx.
In an eerily similar fashion to their first contest, Lizabeth Aparicio had both markers for CSI. The game was tied at the half, 0-0, thanks to some luck and quality goalkeeping on both sides.
Rebecca Gritz turned aside the only shot on goal in the first half and saw two shots hit the post and crossbar, respectively. Offensively, a shot by
Daniela Castro at 6:08 was handled by the Dolphins goalie.
CSI got on the board just before the hour mark when Aparicio got her head on a free kick and deflected it home. They added a second goal when Aparicio found the back of the net on a scrum in the middle of the box in the 76
th minute.
Lehman's best chance to score in the game came in the 67
th minute when
Pamela Sanchez-Espejel put a free kick into the box from 30 yards out and
Melanie Siranaula deflected it just wide of the target. Gritz made five shots in the game.
"I'm really proud of our seniors and the rest of the team," commented head coach
Casey Melilli. "We played well in the first half. CSI came out in the second half very determined and we had a problem responding."
The Lehman College women's soccer team finished the 2017 campaign with an overall record of 10-8-1 and a 4-2 conference ledger. The season culminated with a trip to the CUNYAC final.
