Lightning Blitz Mountaineers …. Defeat Southern Vermont 96-71

The Lehman College men's basketball team continued their impressive shooting display as they hit 35 of 63 field goals attempts en route to a 96-71 victory over previous unbeaten Southern Vermont (6-1).  Lehman (6-2) has now won four straight as the team will now focus on finals and the holiday's before they return to action on December 28.

Luis Hernandez paced the Lightning with 19 points and a career high 10 assists.  Mylo Mitchell added 15, Andrew Utate 13 and John Brens 12 points. Gabe Lorenzo caught up with Mitchell after the game.

Lehman jumped on top early and kept their foot on the gas.  Leading 9-7 after six minutes of play Lehman went on a 15-0 run to break the game open.  During the spurt Hernandez led the charge with seven points.  A jumper by the Mountaineers and back to back threes by Ja-Zhyoun Laing and Brens pushed the lead up to 21, 30-9 with just under eight minutes to play in the first half.  Lehman extended the lead to 30, 48-18 after a Brens layup before settling on a 51-24 lead at halftime.

A 7-0 run by the Mountaineers to start the second half brought the lead down to 20.  Andre Hodo converted a layup at the 16 minute mark to bring the Lightning advantage down to 18 and after a Lightning time-out the Lehman scored six straight points to push the lead back up to 24 points.  Lehman once again brought the lead up to 30, 73-43 after another Brens layup at the 10:31 mark.  Over the next five minutes the Mountaineers cut the lead to 18.  However they would not get any closer as the Lightning were able to close out the game.

The Lightning were credited with a season high 24 assists.  Lehman also shot a season best 12-22 (.545) from behind the arc.  The 96 points scored is also a season high.

Hodo paced the Mountaineers with 14 points and eight rebounds.  Daemond Carter came off the bench and added 12 points while leading scorer Mike Pierre chipped in 10 points all in the second half.

The Lightning will return to action on December 28-29 as they host the 11th Annual Coaches vs Cancer Tournament.  Lehman will face the College of Mt. St. Vincent at 6 PM on the 28th and then play either SUNYIT or Southern Maine the following day.
