Lightning Sweep Doubleheader against Valley Forge

Box Score Postgame interview with Labriska Charles

Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College softball team took on the University of Valley Forge in a home doubleheader, and won 6-5 in game one and 10-2 in five innings to sweep game two Monday night at the South Field.

The Lightning (4-14) have now won three straight games after a slow start to the 2017 campaign.

Maranda Diaz compiled three hits, three runs and three RBI in the two games including a two-run homer in game two. They also got runs driven in by Linda Resto, Julines Reynoso and Andrelina Gil in the first game, while Yaidee Nieves and Mikaela Hamlett drove in runs in the second game.

Hailey Davila earned her first win of the season, entering in relief and allowing just two hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings. In game two, Nieves secured her second win of the year by giving up one earned run on just two hits and striking out three.

Game one saw the Patriots (3-20) storm out with four runs in the first innings on five hits. Gil's RBI single chipped away at the deficit in the first, then the squad got two runs in the second on a Resto RBI hit and Diaz RBI single. Caitlin Vernon would score on a wild pitch in the third to tie the game at four.

After a few scoreless innings between the two teams, Valley Forge would move ahead in the sixth on a Shania Walker RBI double. However in the bottom half of the frame, an error allowed pinch runner Labriska Charles to score to even it at 5-5. Later in the inning, Reynoso delivered an RBI single to center that put the Lightning up 6-5. Davila pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to take game one.

Lehman jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning of game two, scoring a wild pitch and a Nieves RBI grounder. After the Patriots scored a run in the third, the Lightning responded with six runs led by Diaz's two-run homer over the left-field wall. Nieves added an RBI single, and four others scored on miscues by Valley Forge.

Hamlett's RBI triple in the fifth closed out the game due to a mercy rule, and the team secured their third straight win.

Up next for the Lightning is a road matchup Saturday against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) as part of a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 10:00 a.m. with the second game following 20 minutes after the end of the first.
