Box Score Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College softball team hosted Brooklyn College in the CUNYAC playoffs first round, and came out aggressive on the base paths in their 10-2 win in five innings Wednesday night at the South Field.
The win extended the winning streak for No. 3-seed Lightning squad (11-22) to seven games, and will face Baruch College in the second round.
The team took time out prior to the game to honor the seniors on the team taking part in their final game at home. They honored
Linda Resto,
Arlette Martinez,
Micharey Almanzar,
Kelsy Camilo and
Karina Lora with plaques and framed jerseys before first pitch.
In the game, four different players (Resto, Vernon,
Yaidee Nieves and
Genesis Paulino) drove in a run in the winning effort. Vernon (two-for-three, stolen base), Resto (hit, walk, stolen base) and
Natasha Minier (two-for-two) each scored two runs.
On the mound, Nieves earned her ninth win of the season by allowing just two hits on two runs while striking out six batters.
The Lightning came out of the gate playing hard at the plate and making moves on the base paths, scoring two quick runs on a Vernon RBI single and a throwing error allowing her to score later in the frame.
In the second, Resto would reach on an RBI infield single, then would hustle to third on an error. She would then score on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0.
After Vernon led off the bottom of the third with a triple down the right-field line, Nieves drove her in with an infield single. Pinch runner
Stephany Cruz would come in the game and would advance from first to third on an error, then take home on a wild pitch. After a single by
Andrelina Gil, Minier followed with a base hit of her own, then an error allowed Gil to score.
Another wild pitch would score Minier, and then Resto would draw a walk then would steal second and take third on an error. She would then take advantage of a passed ball to score, completing a five-run inning.
Brooklyn (6-25) would chip away with two runs in the top of the fourth, but Lehman would then respond by loading the bases and pinch-hitter Paulino would draw a bases-loaded walk.
Nieves would wrap up the game in the fifth with a one-two-three inning for the victory.
Lehman now moves onto the next round of the CUNYAC playoffs, where they will face Baruch College Friday at the College of Staten Island. Time is yet to be determined for the game, while live stats and streaming video will be made available on CSI's website.
