Box Score Staten Island, N.Y. -- The No. 3 Lehman College softball team continues their winning ways, earning timely hits and great pitching as they topped No. 2-seeded Hunter College in a 4-1 victory in the CUNYAC double elimination tournament Saturday afternoon at the campus of the College of Staten Island.
With the win, the Lightning advance to the winner's bracket later in the day to take on host and top-seeded Staten Island. They also extend their season-best winning streak to eight games.
Starting pitcher
Yaidee Nieves earned her tenth win of the season, allowing one unearned run on six hits through seven strong innings.
Andrelina Gil ripped the go-ahead hit in the fourth inning with an RBI triple, while
Natasha Minier also tallied a run batted in in the win. Both Nieves and
Linda Resto also scored the remaining runs.
The Hawks (13-15) took an early advantage with a Briana Monaco RBI single in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, Resto reached on a bunt singled then swiped second base. After a
Maranda Diaz walk, Resto would score on a fielding error on an
Arlette Martinez sacrifice bunt that scored Resto which tied the game.
After Nieves walked and stole second, Gil roped a double down the left-field line and took third to give Lehman the 2-1 lead. Minier followed with an RBI fielder's choice, then would score later on a throwing error to extend the lead to 4-1.
Hunter would put runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but Nieves would bear down and escape trouble in all three innings to maintain the lead. She then closed out the seventh one-two-three to seal the victory.
