Box Score Staten Island, N.Y. -- In game four of the winner's bracket of the CUNYAC tournament, the Lehman College softball team grabbed an early lead but would fall to host and No.1 seed Staten Island, 9-1 in five innings, Saturday night at the CSI Softball Complex.
The loss snaps an eight-game winning streak for the Lightning that spanned into the playoffs, including earlier in the day defeating No. 2 Hunter, 4-1.
Maranda Diaz and
Arlette Martinez collected the team's two hits and two stolen bases on the day, with Cailtin Vernon notching the team's run batted in.
Lehman would start the first inning with two straight bunt singles by Diaz and Martinez to lead off the game, then would both steal a base. Vernon came to the plate and lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Lightning the early edge. The Dolphins would respond with a run in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single to even the game at 1-1.
Staten Island would break the game open in the second with four runs in the inning, led by a Jacqueline Cautela two-run triple. They would tack on four more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly. In their last effort, Lehman failed to score in the top of the fifth to end the contest.
The Lightning will have to run the table and win multiple games tomorrow for a chance at a CUNYAC title. They return to action early tomorrow to take on the No. 2 seed Hunter College again in the morning at the CSI Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and would play CSI again at 1:15 p.m.Â
