Box Score The Lehman College women's soccer team opened its 2017 campaign with a 6-1 loss to Centenary University as part of the Cyclone Classic on Friday.
Daisy Gomez accounted for the lone Lightning goal.
Pamela Sanchez-Espejel nearly got Lehman on the board early on when her shot just 0:30 into action had to be parried by Cyclone goalie, Kaitlin Marold. Centenary struck first in the seventh minute when Chloe Christopher connected with Kara LaPolice who found the back of the net.
Gredia Sanchez-Espejel almost had the equalizer in the 16
th minute when she got her head on a pass and forced Marold to make another save. Less than a minute later, Gomez evened the score at 1-1, calmly driving a penalty shot home.
At the 25:02 mark, Amanda Benoit broke the tie with a chip from 25 yards out that crept past Lehman keeper,
Rebecca Gritz. Centenary led 2-1. At the half hour mark, Benoit passed to Emily Pizzuto, who scored to make it 3-1. Another LaPolice tally made the score 4-1, Cyclones, at the half.
Centenary scored a pair in the second half to earn the 6-1 victory. Gritz turned aside seven shots in the game. Sanchez-Espejel and Gomez each had a pair of shots for the Lightning.
Gomez, a midfielder from Port Chester, New York, is the leading returning scorer for the Lightning. She totaled 22 points in 2016 on ten goals and a pair of assists.
The Lehman College women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, September 2, at 3PM, when they face the United States Coast Guard Academy in day two of the Cyclone Classic.
