Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team extended its winning-streak to five games with an 89-72 victory over CCNY in a game played in the Bronx on Friday. The team improved to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in CUNYAC play.
The first four minutes of action was back and forth as neither side could gain a foothold. With the score knotted at 7-7,
Mylo Mitchell buried a three-point at the 15:50 mark, and Lehman was cruising. A
Tevon Bennett jumper at 12:05 got the lead into double digits, at 22-12. A layup from
Luis Hernandez and a bucket from Mitchell, both in the closing seconds of the half, gave Lehman a five-point swing and cemented the lead at 49-34 at the half.
Lehman opened the second half with consecutive baskets from
Andrew Utate, and the lead quickly grew to 19, at 53-34, with 19:07 left. A steal and layup from Hernandez at 10:15, gave Lehman its largest lead, 25 points, at 72-47. They went on to win, 89-72
Hernandez shot 10-15 and led the Lightning with 21 points. Mitchell finished with 20, while Utate, back from an injury, fell short of a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Clinton Akalonu was a perfect 4-4 from the field.
The five-game-winning streak ties for the season-best. The Lightning went unbeaten in five contests back in the month of December. The team returns to action on Monday, January 22, when they face Brooklyn College on the road at 7:15 PM.
