Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team extended its win streak to eight games after disposing of John Jay, 86-68, in the Bronx on Saturday. The team is now 16-4 overall and 11-1 in CUNYAC competition.
Lehman won the game largely due to a pair of scoring runs – one in each half – that proved to be insurmountable for the Bloodhounds. The Lighting opened the game with a 14-0 lead over the first 5:27 of game time as
Andrew Utate scored nine and
Clinton Akalonu added five in that run. John Jay battled back and pulled within five, trailing at the half, 41-36.
The Bloodhounds used the first 7:58 of action to pull within two points, 51-49. From there, the Lightning went on their second run and effectively put the game away. They outscored John Jay 10-0 over the next 2 minutes to make the score 61-49.
Luis Hernandez opened the run with a three-point-play.
Mylo Mitchell and
Jean Marcial added a pair of foul shots each. Mitchell capped the run with a three-pointer. The advantage swelled to 14 points when Marcial made a bucket less than two minutes later.
Hernandez scored seven of the final 12 Lehman points as the Lightning went on to win, 86-68. He totaled 31 points and had eight rebounds. Utate chipped in with 22 and Mitchell had a dozen. Following the game, Utate was named the Ed Kramer MVP award, given annually to the Lehman MVP of the homecoming game.
The Lehman College men's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, January 30, at 7:30 PM, when they face Baruch in Manhattan.
