Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team improved to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in CUNYAC play following a 68-52 victory over Baruch on Tuesday in the Bronx. The Lightning had a balanced scoring attack with two players reaching double-figures.
Lehman jumped out to an early 10-2 advantage and never looked back.
Luis Hernandez picked up a pair of assists on the first to buckets of the game, finding
Andrew Utate for three to open the scoring and following that with a connection to
Jean Marcial for a jumper.
Mylo Mitchell added a three-pointer and Utate made a basket to cap the scoring run. Baruch pulled within a point twice in the first half, but could never get the lead. The Lehman cushion reached double figures when a pair of Utate free throws at 6:55 made the score 23-13. The Lightning led at the break, 35-21.
The Lehman lead got as large as 19 points, when a
John Brens basket at 12:47 made the score 47-28. The Bearcats pulled within seven, but the Lightning got a final jumper from
Sean Frederick in the closing seconds to make the final score, 68-52.
In the win, Marcial shot 9-13 and totaled 19 points. Utate was 6-12 and had 18. Brens came off the bench and had a strong all-around game, scoring nine points (on 4-7 shooting), dishing out five assists and collecting a game-best four steals.
The Lehman College men's basketball team returns to action on Thursday, January 11, when they face Hunter College at 7PM in Manhattan.
