Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team let a 23-point lead dissipate but held on for a 96-94, double overtime win against Baruch in the Bronx on Tuesday. The team improved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in CUNYAC competition.
Lehman built a 23-point lead into the third quarter when an
Aliyah Dorsett foul shot at 3:48 made the score, 61-38. That entire cushion would be gone by the end of the fourth quarter where
Ayanna Behagen calmly sank a pair of foul shots at the end of regulation to even the score at 75-all and force overtime.
The Bearcats held the lead through most of the first overtime. A clutch three-pointer from
Lillybeth Garcia turned a two-point deficit into an 83-82 Lehman lead, with just 1:11 on the clock. From there, Baruch scored the next three point to go ahead, 85-83. Following a thirty-second timeout by Coach Harrison,
Lynda Fields held the ball for the final shot for Lehman. She drove to the basket, drew the foul and calmly made both free throws to even the score at 85-85 and force a second overtime.
The Lightning took over in the second O.T. after three of Baruch's starters eventually fouled out. Lehman led by six, 94-88, after Behagen made two foul shots with 0:21 left. Baruch managed to score the next four points and pulled within 94-92. Fields sealed the game with two more freebies down the stretch.
Dorsett and
Lynda Fields each finished with 25 points. Behagen and Selena Gomez both recorded double-double with Behagen posting 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Gomez totaled 13 and 15. Garcia came off the bench to score a dozen and give out eight assists.
Next up for the Lightning is a matchup with CUNYAC rival, Hunter College on Thursday, January 11 at 5PM in Manhattan.
