The started CUNYAC volleyball play with a pair of victories over CCNY and CSI each in straight sets.
Against CCNY, the Lightning prevailed 25-23, 25-21 and 25-21.
Roberto Ventura Diaz led the way with 10 kills while
Yaw Eshun and Filipe Velandia added nine apiece.
George Montilla was credited with 32 assists.
The first set was a back and forth affair. With the set tied at 16, the Lightning were able to rattle off three straight points to take control but the Beavers battled back to trail 24-23 after winning a pair of points. However, it was Ventura Diaz's kill that secured the first set victory. The second set was just as competitive. The Beavers jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the Lighting rallied to knot the set at four. With the set tied at 17, the Lightning would score the next four points to take control. A kill and service ace by
Peter Veljovic sparked the run. The Beavers were able to cut the deficit to two on two occasions but were unable to get any closer. In the third, the Lightning jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Leading 7-6 the Lightning went on a 9-4 run to take control cruising to victory.
In the nightcap, Lehman was also a straight set victor by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-17. Velandia led the way with eight kills,
Juan Carlos Santos was credited with 15 digs and
George Montilla added 24 assists.
In the opening set the Lightning jumped out to a 7-1 advantage. However, CSI rallied to tie the score at 14. Lehman then proceeded to run off four straight points to take control. The Dolphins were able to cut the lead to 2, 19-17 but Lehman would again run off four straight to put the set out of reach. In the second set with the score tied at 2, Coach Ebbesen called an early timeout and her troops responded. The Lightning went on a 6-1 run to bust the set open. CSI cut the deficit to 8-6 but the Lightning quickly answered with an 8-2 run making the score 16-8. The Dolphins would not get any closer. In the final set, with the score tied at 10, Lehman again went on an 8-2 run to take control. After a Lehman attacking error, the Lightning went on a 5-0 spurt to put the match out of reach.
With the victories the Lightning improve to 7-5:2-0 having won three straight. CCNY dropped their first match of the season and now stand at 7-1:1-1 while CSI falls to 1-5:0-2.
Lehman returns to action on Thursday night as they host the Yeshiva University. Action from the APEX gets underway at 8 PM.
