Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Volleyball Sends Bautista Out a Double-Winner on Senior Day

Bronx, N.Y. - The men's volleyball team made it a clean sweep in a doubleheader on Thursday, defeating Medgar Evers and Wilkes without dropping a set.  The team improved to 12-8 overall.  Between games, the Lightning honored the lone senior, Jose Bautista, who was playing in his final home game.

Game one of the doubleheader saw Lehman defeat the Cougars, 3-0.  The scores were 25-11, 25-11 and 25-14.  Jose Bautista finished with a double-double of 25 assists and ten digs.  Yaw Eshun led the team with 11 kills.

The game was back-and-forth early eventually being tied at 3-3.  From there, Lehman tallied four straight points to lead 7-3.  Eshun had a kill and ace and forced a Medgar error in the run.  After the Cougars got as close as 10-6, another Lightning rally put the set out of reach.  Two Medgar errors, a block from Eshun and Dominique Herrera and kills from Eshun and Mentor Mahmuti made the score 15-6.  Another 6-0 run keyed by the serve of Filipe Velandia pushed the lead to 23-9 and Peter Veljovic finished the set with a kill.

Medgar jumped out to a 2-0 lead in set two.  Both sides jockeyed for control before a pair of Cougars points made the score 8-7 for Lehman.  Strong serves from Jose Bautista keyed a 4-0 run that made the score 12-7.  After a Medgar point made the score 12-8, the Lightning rattled off nine straight points to make the score 21-8.  Roberto Ventura Diaz was the lone Lehman server in that stretch.  A Veljovic ace gave the set to Lehman.

Set three was a one-point-game until Lehman was up 5-4.  From there, a 5-0 run made the score 10-4, Lightning.  Eshun keyed the run with a kill and strong serves.  Medgar never threatened the rest of the way and Eshun closed out the set and match with a kill.

Game two went to Lehman in three sets.  The scores were 25-12, 25-13 and 25-22.  Juan Carlos Santos led the team with 10 digs.  Roberto Ventura Diaz had ten kills and Bautista totaled nine. George Montilla gave out 31 assists.

In set one, Lehman led 6-5 until a 5-0 run pushed their advantage to 11-5.  Velandia's strong serves keyed the run.  An Eshun kill closed out the set for the Lightning.

Set two was back and forth early and eventually the Colonels led, 8-7.  Lehman took control courtesy of a 6-1 run that made the score 13-8.  They closed out the set on a Bautista kill and serve that was misplayed for an error.

Neither side could gain a stronghold in the third set as each team was always within three points.  With Lehman ahead, 20-18, the Lightning capitalized on a service error and consecutive kills from Velandia to go up, 23-18.  Wilkes scored four of the next five, before the Lightning took the set on a Colonels service error.

With the victories, the Lehman College men's volleyball team improved to 12-8 on the year.  They return to action on Saturday, March 17, when they face CSI in a non-CUNYAC match from Staten Island.  The first serve is slated for 11AM.
