Baseball Splits Doubleheader with SUNY Purchase

Bronx, NY - The Lehman College baseball team split a doubleheader with SUNY Purchase on Saturday, dropping the opener, 8-4, before winning the second game, 7-2.  The team has won three-of-four in the last two days.

The Panthers took a 4-0 lead in game one before the Lightning were able to respond.  In the bottom of the fifth, David Rodriguez laced a one-out, triple to center.  He scored on an RBI groundout from Brandon Castillo.  Lehman made it interesting an inning later.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Lightning struck.  Carlo Francisco ripped a single to the opposite field.  Mark Vargas followed and reached on a fielding error.  With two outs, Namir Garcia connected on a clutch, three-run blast that tied the score at 4-4.  However, Purchase scored four times in the seventh and took the opener, 8-4.  Emmanuel Velasquz fell to 1-1 with the complete game loss.

Game two went to Lehman, 7-2.  Sophomore, Rich Frommelt, tossed a complete-game, six hitter.  He struck out nine and didn't allow and earned one.  He won his first decision of the year.

Frommelt got out of his own jamb in the top of the first by picking a runner off third base.  The righty got offensive help right away as Lehman scored four times in their half.  Julius Puryear led off with a triple to center.  He scored on a Michael Zerbo single.  Mark Vargas reached on a fielder's choice that erased Zerbo.  Natanael Toribio was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second.  Garcia delivered again, this time with an RBI single that plated Vargas.  Toribio also scored when the outfielder misplayed the ball.  The fourth run scored on an RBI triple from David Rodriguez.

Lehman scored two more in the third.  Francisco led off with his fifth homer of the year.  Vargas followed with a double and scored on a Toribio single.  Purchase scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, but the Lightning tacked on another run in the fifth when Toribio doubled and later scored on a David Rodriguez sacrifice fly.

Lehman is now 5-6 on the year.  They return to action on Monday, March 19, when they face Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, New York.  The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
