Queens, N.Y. - The Lehman College volleyball team defeated York 3-0, in a match played at York College on Thursday. The Lightning improved to 14-9 overall and 4-2 in CUNYAC play. The scores of the sets were 25-9, 25-16 and 25-17. Yaw Eshun led the team with 12 kills, while George Montilla gave out 27 assists. The team totaled 11 aces in the match.
Montilla got Lehman off to a 6-0 lead in set one. His serves helped account for the six points to open the match. Eshun had two kills and Xayveon Wiliams had another. After straight points from York, Lehman rolled off another 9-0 run to go up 15-4. Eshun served all nine points and Filipe Velandia recorded two kills in that stretch. Peter Veljovic served out the set for the Lightning.
Set two was back-and-forth early on with the score eventually even at four. Lehman used a pair of 4-0 runs to take control. Already up 19-16, the Lightning scored the final five points of the set to take it, 25-16. Veljovic, Eshun and Velandia all had kills in that stretch.
Set three was eventually tied at 5-5. From there, a 6-0 run gave Lehman control. The six points came on three aces from Jose Bautista, a kill from Eshun and a York error. Later in the set, a 7-0 run put the Lightning up 18-8. The match ended on a Veljovic kill.
The Lehman College men's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, March 24, when they fac Arcadia and Springfield College in a tri-match from Springfield, Massachusetts. The match with Arcadia is slated for 1:00 PM.
