Springfield, Mass. - The Lehman College men's volleyball team dropped matches to Arcadia (3-1) and Springfield College (3-0) in a tri-match played in Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday. The team is now 14-11 on the season.
The Lightning took a set, but ultimately fell to Arcadia, 3-1. The scores went 27-25, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-12. Filipe Velandia had a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Yaw Eshun totaled 14 kills, while George Montilla gave out 38 assists. Lehman played from behind throughout the first set until a late, 5-0 run turned a 3-0 deficit into a 22-20 lead for the Lightning. The points came from an Eshun block a kill from Velandia and three kills from Eshun also. Lehman led 25-24, but Arcadia scored three straight points to take the set, 27-25.
After falling behind 3-1 early in set two, the Lightning used another rally, this time a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead. The points came from two Arcadia errors and kills from Velandia and Roberto Ventura Diaz. The score would be tied at 12-12, but Arcadia took the set, 25-19.
Set three went to Lehman, 25-23. The Lightning played from behind again, eventually evening the score at 13-all. Arcadia used a 7-2 run to take a 20-15 lead. Velanida, Eshun and Diaz keyed a 5-0 Lehman run that tied the score at 21-all. Peter Veljovic put the Lightning up 24-23 with a kill and teamed with Diaz to block an attack for the final point. Set four went to Arcadia 25-12. Lehman fell behind 12-4 and was never able to recover.
Match two went to Springfield, 3-0. The scores of the sets were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-15. Montilla led the team with 11 assists. After trading points early on in set one, Lehman trailed 12-4 and never caught up. Set two saw the Lightning go down 6-2 but rallied to pull within 18-16. Springfield closed out the set with a 7-2 run. Finally, Lehman trailed 6-0 in set three and couldn't recover. An Eshun kill got them as close as 8-5, but Springfield took the set, 25-12.
The team returns to action on Tuesday, March 27, when they face Brooklyn College in Brooklyn at 6PM.
